Fiber-optic amplifiers as they are employed in optical communications systems, for example those including light waveguides doped with Er3+, have a gain that is highly dependent on the wavelength in the wavelength range of interest. According to the invention the emission, wavelength .lambda.o of the semiconductor laser of an optical transmission system is regulated by way of a control device provided within the optical transmitter to that wavelength at which the fiber-optic amplifiers have a maximum gain. The control device finds the optimum wavelength in that it evaluates the light absorption of a reference light waveguide piece whose maximum lies at the same wavelength at which the …

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 17, 1993 and granted February 2, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 17, 2013.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 17, 2015.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
