This invention relates to methods for the treatment of various bodily illnesses that result in tissue injury mediated by oxygen-derived free radicals and oxidants by providing patients AICA riboside or prodrugs and analogs thereof as antioxidants and free radical scavengers. This invention also relates to the use of the above mentioned compounds to inhibit platelet aggregation in thrombolytic therapy and to inhibit membrane fusion events required for viral entry by their ability to neutralize oxidative destruction of cell membranes.
