Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method and an apparatus for cooling a superconducting material below the boiling point of liquid nitrogen by using liquid nitrogen as coolant. The cooling method of the invention can be used in two different modes, one under reduced pressure and the other under the atmospheric pressure. The former comprises a coil container which is in fact a vacuum vessel and the temperature of which is lowered by to the triple point of nitrogen by means of a vacuum pump. The latter comprises a coil container containing therein a cooling section of a freezer and the temperature of the coil container is lowered to the melting point of nitrogen by the freezer.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 25, 1992 and granted July 7, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 25, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 25, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
