Abstract From the Canadian patent

An arc discharge lamp having an arc tube mounted within a lamp envelope includes a thermal switch for controlling application of electrical energy to a starting electrode. The thermal switch is mounted between the arc tube and the lamp base with its longitudinal axis generally parallel to the central axis of the lamp envelope. The thermal switch is spaced from the central axis of the lamp envelope by a support rod and extends into an annular space between the lamp stem and the wall of the lamp envelope. As a result the maximum temperature of the thermal switch during lamp operation does not exceed about 400ÀC.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed December 10, 1992 and granted March 12, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 10, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 10, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
