Abstract From the Canadian patent

A conduction assisted steam flooding process is described where heavy oil is recovered from reservoirs with limited native injectivity and a high water saturated bottom zone. A horizontal well is placed above the water saturated zone. This well is perforated on its top side at selected intervals. An uninsulated tubing having a circumference smaller than the well is inserted therein to its furthest end thereby making a first and second conduit. Steam is injected into the second conduit and formation fluids are removed by the first conduit or tubing until steam communication is established between the two intervals. Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 30, 1992 and granted November 19, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 30, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 30, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
