A method of treating lake water to remove suspended solids and to precipitate and inactivate phosphorus comprises adding aluminum hydroxide sulfate to the water in a concentration such that the pH of the water is maintained at a level of greater than 6.0 and precipitation of suspended solids and precipitation and inactivation of phosphorus occurs. This invention is advantageous in that it provides a method of removing suspended solids as well as precipitating and inactivating phosphorus in water while simultaneously preventing the solubilizing of toxic amounts of aluminum into the water with subsequent detrimental effects to aquatic life.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 14, 1991 and granted February 12, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 14, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 14, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
