Abstract From the Canadian patent

The invention relates to a process for the production of 3-hydroxyalkanals, more particularly 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde, by hydration of the corresponding 2-alkenals more, particularly acrolein, in the presence of a(olilcatalyst containing acidic functional groups. The use of catalysts based on an inorganic support containing basic activity centers, which are at least partly occupied by a polybasic acid, of which the first pK s value is between 0 and 3 in a, form in which it cannot be removed by water enables the, hydration to be carried out with high selectivity. At the same time, the disadvantages of known organic fixed-bed catalysts are avoided. Preferred catalysts are based on titanium …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 26, 1992 and granted July 9, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 26, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 26, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
