Apparatus and processes are described for the automatic recognition of alphanumeric images. A set of cuts are made to the image which include incorrectsegmentations. The resulting "cells" comprising in their totality the created segments of the image are then analyzed to determine which cells are legal neighbors and which are not. All cells which are legal neighbors are then presented as connected nodes. A pruning of nodes which are related to certain predetermined image cuts is effected. Each set of remaining connected nodes is then presented to a recognizer which identifies the image and assigns a specified probability to theoutput. Many cells which are not legal neighbors are thereby not …

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 24, 1992 and granted January 12, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 24, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 24, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
