Abstract From the Canadian patent

Supplementary cooling for a mechanical refrigeration plant using ammonia as a refrigerant is provided by placing a tube in the vapour space of a buffer vessel and introducing liquid nitrogen into the tube. Although ammonia solidifies at -78°C and liquid nitrogen enters the tube at -196°C no ammonia solidifies on the tube even after extended operation. The present invention also provides a method of refrigeration which comprises introducing liquid nitrogen into the heat exchanger of a refrigeration apparatus in accordance with the invention and condensing refrigerant therewith. Preferably, the refrigerant is selected from the group consisting of ammonia and fluorocarbon R22.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed November 20, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 20, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 20, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
