A computer is programmed in accordance with an algorithm which allows it to send a series of tentative unique initialization commands to a port which should be connected to a modem for the purpose of establishing what type of modem is connected if any. In accordance with an internal flag setting an appropriate, translation table is then used in any future communications with that modem to convert the basic commands used by the computer operated device to commands that will be recognized by the modem in setting up communications with other modems at the other end of a transmission line and for terminating said communications.
