The invention relates to cleaning agents for returnable plastic or plasticcoated glass containers containing at feast one organic solvent and a process for cleaning the containers. With the aid of the organic solvent, yellow-brown discolorations and changes in odour caused by the washing lye generally used in the foodstuffs industry are eliminated or prevented.
