A device for automatically spreading and locking cotter pins as they are driven into place is provided. The device is an improvement on prior cotter pin spreading devices which can accidentally dislodge or become loosened. The improved devices have locking extensions which during, the act of driving cotter pins into place become deformed, into locking engagement with the heads on the driven and spread cotter pins. Several forms of locking extensions are disclosed.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 4, 1992 and granted September 9, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 4, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 4, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
