A light beam heating system for performing local heating includes a source for emitting light, and an optical lens assembly for converging the light from the source onto an object to be heated. A cylinder supplies shielding gas towards the object through a regulator a valve, and a nozzle. During the light heating operation the oxygen concentration, of the atmosphere around the object is maintained at less than 5%. The shielding gas can be supplied to the object through a temperature regulator so that it is heated to a desired temperature prior to being directed onto the object.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 14, 1992 and granted March 25, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 14, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 14, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
