Abstract From the Canadian patent

Novel fluorescent labeling techniques and fluorescent labels are provided employing high affinity intercalating fluorescent dyes and dsDNA. The dyes find application to provide highly sensitive labeling of nucleic acids in electrophoretic gels and as preprepared labels for binding to a wide variety of specific binding pair members. The DNA-dye fluoresces complex can be used for labels in diagnostic assays, detection of specific nucleic acid sequences and the like.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed March 8, 1991 and granted February 5, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 8, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 8, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
