Abstract From the Canadian patent

A compact ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) with increased sensitivity and resolution for detecting the composition of an unknown substance is disclosed. The IMS comprises a unitary cylindrical housing inlet means, for introducing sample gas outlet means for withdrawing, sample and drift gas two high voltage electrodes, and a, detector. The first electrode is pulsed to inject sample ions through an opening located in a second electrode which defines a drift region. The second electrode is cup-shaped having an open end and is electrically biased to create a non-uniform electric field gradient across said drift region. The electric field in said drift region is axial and radial resulting in an …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed August 20, 1992 and granted May 15, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended August 20, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 20, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
