4-methyl-3-(4-trifluormethyl)phenoxy-3-phenyl propylamine (I) is prepared by reacting 3-dimethylamino-1-phenyl-1propanol (III) with haloformate (VIII) to obtain a substituted propyl carbamate (IX) which is hydrolyzed under basic conditions to yield methylamino-1-phenyl-1-propanol (X). The methylamino-1-phenyl-1propanol is then converted to fluoxetine (I) by reaction with 4-halo-benzotrifluoride (XI). In the process certain substituted carbamates are obtained as intermediates.

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 12, 1992 and granted October 14, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended August 12, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 12, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
