There is disclosed a network control system (32) for use in a communication network (12) for controlling the receipt and transmission of messages between at least a pair of nodes (18) of the network. Messages conveyed within the network include short messages having a length less than a predetermined number of bytes and long messages having a length greater than the predetermined number of bytes.
