A washing machine controls system employing a thermistor at the inlet valve which enables integration of flow temperature in the valve with time to limit the thermal energy input of water. In another mode, fuzzy interference logic is used to automatically determine wash time based on signal inputs from a water turbidity sensor and a water fill/load sensor. The water fill/load sensor also enables automatic fill to the minimum water level needed to wash a given load of clothes. Fill load sensing employs sensing the reflection of either an ultrasonic or audible acoustic signal from the clothes as the tub is filled.

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 22, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended July 22, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 22, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
