In a water power station, the runner (4) of the water turbine (2) is connected through a gear train (6) to the electrical generator (8). Between this gear train (6) and the generator (8) there is a coupling (9), e.g. an hydraulically operated plate coupling which can be engaged and disengaged when under load and this, disengages the generator (8) in the event that the maximally permitted speed is exceeded. This makes it possible to use a cost-effective generator having a high nominal speed which despite this, can survive a run-away turbine without suffering any damage and does not have to be made so as to be resistant to run-away speeds.

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 8, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended July 8, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 8, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
