Abstract From the Canadian patent

Flashover protection is provided for a locomotive propulsion system including a plurality of d-c traction motors (15 16), each having a commutator (15A) subject to flashovers. A flashover detector (32) is provided for producing a fault signal in case a flashover occurs. In response to the fault signal a solid-state controllable , electric valve (71) connected between the excitation current source (17) and the alternator field winding (12f) is changed to a nonconducting state, whereupon the magnitude of excitation current in the alternator field winding (12f) is rapidly reduced toward zero and the alternator's output current is correspondingly decreased whenever a flashover occurs.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed August 9, 1991 and granted January 28, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended August 9, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 9, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
