A process is described for producing castings comprising the steps of introducing a charge of molten metal e.g. aluminum into a, mould, cooling the molten metal in the mould until the outer layer of the metal solidifies and contracts leaving a gap between the surface of the casting and the surface of the mould injecting, into the gap a gas having a different thermal conductivity than air whereby the rate of further cooling of the casting can be controlled, continuing the cooling of the casting and removing the casting from the mould.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 19, 1990. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 19, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 19, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
