A security clip includes a transparent reservoir filled with a non-washable, non-freezing, non-toxic ink which is under pressure. A needle is fixed on the lower side of the reservoir and is used to attach the reservoir to electronic security tags for clothing. If the clip is improperly removed from the electronic tag by a shoplifter the reservoir, breaks open releasing the ink and permanently staining the article to which the tag was attached. Use of the reservoir in combination with an electronic security tag provides extra protection against the shoplifting of protected articles from stores.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 28, 1992 and granted June 30, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 28, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 28, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
