Abstract From the Canadian patent

An improved method of producing a site for tissue ingrowth on a surgical implant 20, 20' by embedding a space occupier 10 possessing a desired pattern in the surface of the implant at the desired location for ingrowth and then solubilizing the embedded space occupier 10 to leave the pattern on the implant surface. Preferably the implant 20, 20' is fabricated from a composite comprising a semi-crystallinethermoplastic resin such as polyetheretherketone or polyphenylene sulfide and the, space occupier 10 is an acid-soluble metal plate machined to produce the desiredpattern and removed by aqueous acid solution. The space occupier 10 is embedded onto the composite surface by induction heating.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 7, 1992 and granted July 21, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 7, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 7, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
