Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method and apparatus for estimating the phase differential of a transmitted electromagnetic signal from the amplitude envelope of the signal. The apparatus includes a sampler, phase estimator and demodulator. The phase estimator uses a Hilbert transform. An approximation of the Hilbert transform may also be used to estimate the phase differential with sign ambiguity. The method of determining the sign ambiguity and the approximation of the Hilbert transform may be applied to time domain or frequency domain signals. The phase differential is estimated by taking the differential of a function of the envelope and applying the Hilbert transform to this differential. The resulting phase …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed April 28, 1992 and granted September 15, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 28, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 28, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
