A method for selecting an optimal operating tension of a motor driven tape in a tape drive is disclosed. The tape is loaded into the tape drive. A test signal is applied to record test information onto the tape while the tape tension is varied concurrently in a prescribed manner for testing. The recorded test information is read immediately to provide a test readback signal. The test readback signal is processed to determine a functional relationship between the test readback signal and the varying tape tension. An operating tape tension value is selected based upon the functional relationship. The selected operating tape tension is implemented on the tape drive in the form of a command …

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 24, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 24, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 24, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
