A process for isolating cloning and maintaining large genomic, fragments of chromosomal DNA. This process includes the steps of introducing a marker into the chromosomal DNA to be cloned inserting double-strand breaks into the chromosome followed immediately by combining the cells containing the chromosome with the fragmented marker to another cell line capable of harboring extrachromosomal DNA elements, and subsequently isolating genomic fragments by separating the extrachromosomal DNA from the chromosomal DNA of the other cell line.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 28, 1990. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended September 28, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 28, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
