Alginate and/or pectate gels are produced by forming an aqueous mixture of a water soluble or water dispensible alginate and/or pectate, a calcium ion sequestrant and a sparingly soluble calcium ion source at low temperature and heating the mixture to cause gelation thereof. Sequestrant is preferably sodium or potassium pyrophosphate but at least pan of the sequestrant may be replaced by meat having calcium ion sequestring activity. The calcium ion source is preferably calcium sulphate dihydrate. Preferably the mixture is heated to at least 50 °C to induce gelation.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 26, 1990 and granted December 4, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 26, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 26, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
