Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method for processing signals to diffuse quantization error spatially or temporally. Positive feedback of the quantization error is used to reduce the relative noise for the low frequencies of the spectrum. According to a preferred implementation in a two-dimensional spatial application involving a base pixel and three adjacent orthogonally arranged pixels error attributable to quantization at the base pixel location is provided as positive feedback for the quantization of the diagonally adjacent pixel. Offsetting and complementary values of the quantization error are also diffused to the remaining two diagonally positioned pixels. The composite of the four pixels forms a square with a …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed March 24, 1992 and granted May 5, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 24, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 24, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
