The invention provides a digital signal recording and/or reproducing apparatus in which the format is such that the digital signals recorded on the recording medium such, as magnetic tape, by a function subject to interchangeability may be distinguished from those not subject to interchangeability, so that it would be easy for the producer of the device to add a unique function or functions in future for distinction from other functions.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 3, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended March 3, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 3, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
