Abstract From the Canadian patent

A microbiological process is disclosed for the production of 6-hydroxypicolinic acid starting from picolinic acid and/or a salt thereof. The concentration of picolinic acid and/or salt thereof is selected so that the 6-hydroxypicolinic acid is not further metabolized upon formation. The process is performed either by using microorganisms of the genus Pseudomonas Bacillus, Alcaligenes, Aerococcus, or Rhodotorula or with a biomass, able to use picolinic acid and grow with picolinic acid as the sole carbon, nitrogen and energy source.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed February 3, 1992 and granted April 3, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 3, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 3, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
