Abstract From the Canadian patent

An optical functioning glass for enabling optical amplification at 1.3-µm wavelength band or increasing efficiency of the amplification is disclosed. The optical functioning glass contains Nd3+ as an active material and uranium, both of which are doped in a multi-component function glass serving as a host glass. Since uranium is doped in the optical functioning glass, light emission of Nd3+ in the 1.06-µm wavelength band can be absorbed by uranium. A decrease in efficiency of induced emission in a 1.3-µm wavelength band can be prevented, and an optical functioning glass suitable for optical amplification in the 1.3-µm wavelength band can be obtained. When a fiber is formed using the optical …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed January 31, 1992 and granted August 19, 1997. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 31, 2012.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 31, 2014.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
