A non-explosive mining apparatus has a series of modules each having a base capable of movement over a footwall in a mine working and each carrying a portion of a rail. The modules are locatable side-by-side with one another with the rail portions in alignment so as to form a continuous rail extending generally parallel to the working face in the mine working. At least one carriage is provided which can be driven along the rail. The carriage carries a circular saw that can be driven in rotation to form a cut in the working face as the carriage moves along the rail. The carriage is designed for the saw to be able to perform tilting and stewing movements.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 29, 1992 and granted September 10, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 29, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 29, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
