A spider or cross for a universal joint is manufactured by first forging the basic configuration of the cross and thereafter extruding the trunnions into their final configuration. The component is initially hot or warm forged into its basic configuration including a central body and a plurality of trunnions. Thereafter the trunnions are, simultaneously extruded into their final configuration eliminating machining and a loss of materials. As a result the grain flow of the component is not disrupted making for a more reliable part.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 10, 1992. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended January 10, 2012.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 10, 2014.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
