Abstract, Optical communication methods and apparatus are disclosed for transmitting two or more optical signals with different optical carrier frequencies on a single optical fiber with high spectral efficiency. Each optical carrier is typically modulated with multiple modulated subcarriers. In one embodiment, an optical phase modulator provides cancellation of second order intermodulation products in each optical signal, thereby permitting the optical carrier frequencies to be spaced by 2fmax, where fmax is the maximum modulation frequency. In another embodiment, a single sideband optical phase modulator provides cancellation of second order intermodulation products and one signal …

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 30, 1991. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended December 30, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 30, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
