Abstract From the Canadian patent

Discoloration of surfaces, such as painted or treated wood surfaces, by tannin-staining caused by the complexing of certain transition metal ions with tannate ions (the process is often referred to in the art as "tannin-stain bleed") is reduced or prevented (eliminated) by contacting a transition natal ion on a painted surface or surface to be painted with a complexing agent for the transition metal ion, such as by the addition of the complexing agent for the transition-metal ion to paint formulations or by pretreatment of the wood surface with the complexing agent before painting. Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 25, 1991 and granted September 19, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 25, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 25, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
