A method of culturing respiratory epithelial cells in vitro on a fluid permeable collagen substrate derived from bovine chorionic membrane tissue. The epithelial cells are harvested from the nasal mucosa of a human donor using a minimally-invasive brushing technique. The culture method includes the step of incubating the plated cells in a relatively undisturbed state such that a substantial amount of the plated cells adhere flatten and, begin to replicate on the substrate surface.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 20, 1991 and granted June 25, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 20, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 20, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
