An orthopedic implant device made of pure titanium or a titanium alloy, such as Ti-6Al-4V (ELI) is exposed to molecular nitrogen gas at a process temperature and for a process time duration sufficient to enhance surface hardness and wear resistance properties without the formation, of a measurable TiN layer that tends to increase surface roughness and diminish wear resistance properties. The process temperature is in the range of 750°F, to 1300°F. preferably about, 1100°F, and the process time duration at the preferred process temperature is …

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 23, 1991 and granted February 6, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended August 23, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 23, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
