Novel devices for the controlled release of active materials especially pharmaceutical are formed from at least two inter-penetrating pieces. The mate piece is water swellable and swells to disengage the female piece. The female piece is preferably formed from a thermoplastic, e.g. LDPE or from a soluble material such as gelatin which is rendered impermeable by an external coating of a hydrophobic material such as PVC. The devices find particular application as oral dosage forms for use in man.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 15, 1990 and granted February 15, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 15, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 15, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
