The inverter includes a low voltage, microcontroller referenced to ground potential and a waveform generator coupled to the microcontroller through a serial data link including optical isolation devices. The waveform generator floats at the negative bus potential of the DC source for the inverter. The waveform generator produces switching signals for the inverter under control of the microcomputer. The waveform generator serial, communications circuitry and other support circuits are all part of a single application specific integrated circuit. Registers store control parameters from the microcontroller, and counters, a look up table and a state machine derive pulse width modulated …

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 18, 1991 and granted April 28, 1998. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 18, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 18, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
