Abstract From the Canadian patent

An interface circuit couples a host processor in an industrial control system to a local area communications network. It includes a protocol machine for receiving and transmitting messages on the network and an interface controller which is programmed to implement one or more protocols. As a message is received by the protocol machine the interface controller anticipates a responsive message which it writes to the protocol machine even as the message is being received. If the message is received accurately the responsive message is transmitted without delay.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 6, 1991 and granted March 19, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 6, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 6, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
