Complementary DNA (cDNA) fragments encoding the Fab and Fv portion of the light and heavy chains of a murine monoclonal antibody (mAb) were prepared from hybridoma messenger RNA (mRNA). The mAb is specific for the intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). Furthermore, the mAb blocks the attachment of human rhinovirus (HRV) particles to their cellular receptor, ICAM-1 Fab and Fv cDNA were molecularly cloned and expressed in a recombinant host purified, and shown to be biologically active in that they bind to ICAM-1, and block attachment of ligands to ICAM-1 including HRV.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 31, 1991. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended May 31, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 31, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
