Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method of coding a set of multi-level signals that includes exhaustively comparing the set with each of a number of vectors to determine a set of difference metrics. A vector is selected that minimizes the difference metric and, a coded representation is then generated based on the selected vector. Each one of the vectors includes a geometric array of one or more elements having a respective magnitude. The metrics reflect at least two magnitudes of the elements of the geometric array. The coded representation is generated only when the differencesbetween respective pairs of magnitudes exceed corresponding threshold values. The coded representation is a coded representation whenever the …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed March 28, 1991 and granted September 3, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended March 28, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 28, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
