A frequency synthesizer using a phase-locked loop is disclosed. The frequency synthesis is accomplished by a closed loop arrangement which includes a digital phase detector, a fixed frequency divider with a divide value Nvd a direct digital synthesizer, a loop filter (low-pass filter) and a voltage controlled oscillator. The direct digital synthesizer (DDS) produces a signal whose frequency is defined by a first presetfrequency (FdO) and a second preset frequency (.delta.Fd) multiplied by a suitable variable coefficient (m). The output frequency of the frequency synthesizer is determined by (Nvd FdO + Nvd .delta.Fd m).

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 27, 1991 and granted May 7, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 27, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 27, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
