Abstract From the Canadian patent

An acoustic scanning method and apparatus implemented by transmitting ultrasonic pressure waves and receiving return echoes on a set of spatially nonoverlapping acoustic lines scanned along a transducer array with the active acoustic lines shifted and steered so that each acoustic line originates at an arbitrary point on and at an arbitrary angle to the face of the array. In a preferred embodiment, an extension of each acoustic line may also pass through a substantially common vertex that is not on the face of the transducer array, but preferably behind it a selectable distance to provide an extended field of view. Why it's free to use

  • Filed February 11, 1991 and granted September 17, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 11, 2011.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 11, 2013.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
