This invention relates to the use of low temperature plasma technology for significantly improved corrosion protection of steel. The plasma process involves pretreating of the steel surfaces by oxygen plasma and thin film deposition by polymerization of certain precursors on the steel. The process utilizes DC power substrates as the, cathode, magentron anodes and system pressures of, 0.01-0.5 torr. After the thin film plasma deposition it is also preferable to put a primer coating over the thin film.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 8, 1991 and granted July 25, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended February 8, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 8, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
