An improved process is disclosed for the preparation of N-phosphonomethylglycine by the oxidation of N-phosphonomethyliminodiacetic acid. In the process N-phosphonomethyliminodiacetic acid is oxidized with a peroxide to form an intermediate N-phos-, phonomethyliminodiacetic acid-N-oxide and thereafter, adding a metabisulfite compound in the presence of a molybdenum compound to convert the intermediate to N-phosphonomethylglycine.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 24, 1991 and granted July 2, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 24, 2011.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 24, 2013.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
