Abstract From the Canadian patent

The use of radiolabelled atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) for in vivo imaging of various organs of a human or animal is disclosed. Such imaging is useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain diseases. Imaging is carried out by administering the radiolabelled ANF and then following the course of the radioactivity in target organs of the body by means of a suitable detection system. The amount and rate of uptake, displacement and wash-out of the radiolabelled compound in the target organ are analyzed to evaluate organ size, function and pathology.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 8, 1990 and granted October 12, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 8, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 8, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
