The present invention is directed toward flexible embossed supportive backings for coated abrasives, which are used with "sanding" tools. The supportive backing is made from a flexible elastomeric material embossed on one side with a predetermined pattern. The embossment pattern includes an uninterrupted narrow border along the edges that lay perpendicular to the primary of travel during use, a plurality of narrow grooves within the border which disrupt the surface area of the elastomeric material, and lines of severance that partially separate the edges of the material from its main body.
