A direct transmission for a bicycle has a box disposed on a rear axle on which a conical gear is disposed. A shaft is coupled to the conical gear so as to drive the hub. A spring biases the shaft toward an annular flange in order that the shaft cannot move longitudinally relative to the box. A hole with a notch is formed in a rear and outer end of the box. The rear axle can be inserted through the notch into the hole. A sleeve nut is engageable with the rear axle so as to stably retain the rear axle in position.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 28, 1990 and granted May 31, 1994. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 28, 2010.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 28, 2012.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
