Abstract From the Canadian patent

A paper tail ripper having a pair of rotatably mounted knives, air motors which counter-rotate the knives and an air jet which deflects the paper tail toward the knives. The knives traverse closely spaced overlapping circles as they counter-rotate. The air jet blows the paper tail onto a transfer mechanism which transfers the paper tail away from the ripper, so that the tail may be threaded through a calender stack, etc. The ripper is pivotally mounted on the transfer mechanism for movement between storage and operating positions. A funnel-shaped housing is positioned over the knives to guide the deflected paper tail into a narrow feed channel centred over the knives.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 24, 1990 and granted April 30, 1996. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 24, 2010.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 24, 2012.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
